Movies: Seoul Station

Movies: Seoul Station

Korea is starting to look like a very dangerous place with zombies coming out in Busan and now they have infected Seoul too. But this time, they have infected the animation world instead of the real world but because the train is no longer the main scene of the movie, you will get to see how the zombie apocalypse will work in a city setting... something that even "The Walking Dead" did not have much opportunity to dive into. (The Walking Dead story focuses not so much on the start of the zombie apocalypse and how it spread, but rather on the immediate aftermath and life after).

As you can see, its not real life film, but don't worry, Zombies are plenty
So how does this other angle into the world of korean zombies do overall? Lets break it down!

Storyline 4/5

The storyline in this movie is.... surprisingly interesting. It has a very good amount of twists and turns throughout the movie and being an anime, it is alright for characters to die... and in this movie.. dying is aplenty!

It also seems to be trying to tell another story about the real world by highlighting real world issues such as the homeless, the poor and those who are living more unfortunate lives even after contributing much in the past. Like many zombie movies, it shows the horror and what people do when driven to the brink and everyone starts becoming self serving. It also shows the result of what happens if you are "too noble" in the real world which may very well reflect the world today.

The only issue is that it did take slightly too long to get into the exciting portions of the movie from the beginning, but once it starts, the storyline remains exciting till the end.

Character 4/5

Characters are really interesting... all the time you will be suspecting whether this character would be the sacrificing type, or the self serving type and they are all unique and have their own backgrounds that explains why they choose to things they way they did.

Overall the characters are quite believable, although the world is slightly strangely empty and a bit too void of zombies.

Cinematography 3/5

Cinematography had its good and bad points.

Good, in that this movie action puts in SOME first person sights BUT sadly, it hardly uses this during the action or exciting scenes but rather to sort of try to help u immerse into the view you would see if u were really there... its quite a waste but in this case, this movie didn't end up becoming a jump scare kind of movie which may be the overall aim of the producer.

The bad point is the anime drawing and method is somewhat bit distracting as characters are clearly animation and not entirely human like at times. In a time whereby animation aims to be life like, this is a slight step backward.

Also, action scenes are just slightly underwhelming and never actually reaches the level of excitement of Train to Busan.

Music 4/5

Music is pretty good in this movie and it really helps to immerse and set the scene of the movie. They didn't try to do anything particularly special with the movie though hence keeping the score at 4.

Spectacle 3/5

In this movie's case, its unfortunate that it came after Train to Busan as it is clearly a more lower budget version of the movie. On the other hand, had there not been the Train to Busan, most likely there will not be as much as a hype to see this movie in the first place.

Like the Train to Busan, this movie does not JUST focus on the zombie survival method but rather more on the human / inhuman aspects of what would happen in a zombie apocalypse and its trying to tell us just a little bit more then how to survive. Hence the storyline aspect feels a bit more fleshed out and interesting.

Like what was said previously in the Cinematography section though, its action scenes does pale in comparison and it just does not have the same impact as the Train to Busan which is unfortunate given that you could actually do a lot in an animation. Guess CGI may actually be less resource intensive then animation or there is really a clear difference in budget.

Overall

Storyline: 4 (Surprisingly interesting and has good twists, but just took a bit longer to get exciting)
Character: 4 (Good mix of characters with believable backgrounds)
Cinematography: 3 (Movie did attempt to make good shots, but it just did not go all the way and stand out above the crowd)
Music: 4 (Music is quite strong and added to the overall experience)
Spectacle: 3 (Its no Train to Busan and the score suffered if you would compare. Nonetheless, the storyline is still good enough as an alternative zombie story in korea)

Overall: 3.6 (It's a fair enough score... obviously with the weaker budget and lack of big names there are some hits to the overall quality of the movie. Nonetheless the storyline is still good enough to entertain someone who has seen the Train to Busan and is interested in how the other cities may have been like in the same situation. If you didn't really see it, or are not the animation loving type though, you can really go ahead and give this a miss as it does not really add anything to the world. It's also not a very strong action movie so don't go into this movie expecting human VS zombie type of action. If you are picking between this movie and Train to Busan however, go for Busan. This movie is only 1 and half hour long so try not to over expect...)

Movies: Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

Movies: Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

Introduction:

Final fantasy, a game that has underwent many ups and downs. For those who do not know, Final Fantasy is a game series that started in 1987 and is now in its 15 instalment. Used to be the cream of the crop in the RPG genre and it did tell a good story. Then it got a bit ambitious and started doing MMORPG and stuff and i personally didn't get into all the MMORPG from the FF series. That being said, it has gone a long way from the pixels in the first generation, to now when game cinematic are like movie cinematic and even seem life like.

Final fantasy games storylines are generally not connected across the series and they are not set out to be alternate timelines or follow a sequence in time or anything like that. This movie is meant to be a tie in or prequel to set the stage of an upcoming game Final Fantasy 15 and all this will take place in a new universe or world with its own history. So how did this movie start up and introduce us to the world of Final Fantasy 15? Read on to find out!

A poster that shows people.. just people.. who are all these people??
Storyline 3/5

Storyline is pretty ok, movie starts off introducing the world pretty well and very quickly puts you into the first battle ground whereby you are quickly able to grasp the relationship between the two main factions in the movie. The movie also quickly sets the stage and introduces both the important character in this movie and the important character in the upcoming game but for the rest of the movie, it is pushed along by the cliched damsel in distress and how the main star of the movie (which you will not see in the game), interacts, protects and saves her.

Movie is fortunately not completely linear and has a few twists and turns to make it not completely bland and predictable.

The issue I have with this movie is that the things the characters do in this movie are generally not very logical and do not make sense. You will blink your eyes as the good and bad guys explain why they did this and that and will remain unconvinced and confused at their rationale for their action. Towards the center of the movie, the storytelling draws to a crawl and it kinda gets a bit too draggy and slow (i,e, you may fall asleep)

Well... would the rest of the movie help raise the overall score? Lets take a look...

Character 2.5/5

Well, if you are looking for a boost in the score... it can't be found here. Nope. There are quite a few different characters in the movie, but they are not very distinct due to short screen time and ordinary stereotypical characteristics.

You will not really feel for any of the characters including the main casts and the damsel in distress is just very dumb, proclaiming to want to do this and that, but never actually playing any essential role except being the female presence.

The rest of the kingsglaive (the knights in this movie) are mostly ordinary and a lot of them will hardly leave any impression on you. Most will die, and you won't care.

Cinematography 3.5/5

Here is the slight boost this movie needs but unfortunately, the boost is as slight as they get. It is action packed indeed and your fights get from small to big with plenty of destruction. You will see good visual effects when people teleport, time slows down, weapons and magic flying all around the place.

However, it gets messy sometimes and with so much teleporting here and there, it becomes hard to follow. You start getting the main hero and villain jumping here and there and this is supposed to look epic and cool but due to the lighting and camera angle, you will NOT be able to appreciate what exactly is happening in the entire battle unless you REALLY make the effort. (risk getting a headache also).

That being said, most of the action scenes does seem exciting and epic in the movie as long as your eyes are able to follow the motion.

Music 3/5

Music is fine and you can actually hear some track from the previous games but it was not able to further improve the immersion of the audience when it is so difficult to follow and appreciate what is going on.

Spectacle 3/5

Sadly, this movie had a very strong source material of which it could do much much better in. The action scenes were epic, but they were not easy to follow. The storyline had twists, but was overall very cliche and unbelievable. Characters were many, but none were appealing enough for anyone to identify with and backgrounds were more or less left to the imagination and inference.

Sure it is good to create a movie that stimulates the mind, but the overall story became so convoluted and unbelievable that requires too much effort from the audience to try to appreciate and enjoy what was going on. On the bright side, you do not need to have played the games as there is little continuity in the first place and honestly, you will not appreciate this movie any better even if you played all the games.

For those who have played the previous games, this movie will show some (but VERY little) familiar titbits from the games that could excite the fans, But it also had TONs of lost potential.

Overall

Storyline: 3 (Cliche and was not very sensible all the way to the end)
Character: 2.5 (Honestly, i can hardly remember any names from the movie....)
Cinematography: 3.5 (Their main focus and there is good amount of time in action scenes. BUT alot of these scenes were hard to follow and that made the movie less immersive)
Music: 3 (Ok music, but did not manage to boost anything to the audience)
Spectacle: 3 (Sadly, did not stand out in action, nor in storyline. Just felt very ordinary, like an action show, but not a Final Fantasy Action show.)

Overall: 3/5 (Really average score, for an average movie. Nothing you will feel bad to miss especially if you have no plans to play the game also. It is just another action flick with more extravagant action sequences (as it is an animation), and an ordinary story that you can just take 5 - 10 minutes to read the sypnosis and that should be good enough.)

Movies: Independence Day Resurgence

Movies: Independence Day Resurgence

They are back again. The aliens that attacked us in 1996 are back to try again. This would be 20 years both in real life and according to the movie time line. So the movie has evolved from this

1996 Independence Day

to this

2016 Independence Day

Do you see any difference? Is there any difference for this movie from the one in 1996 to now? Read on and find out more. And No. This has completely nothing to do with Brexit. That's a difference kind of independence day.

Storyline 2/5
Let me explain the low score. Basically, the whole storyline and direction of this movie is almost similar to the previous movie in 1996. Yes the cast are changed, but everything that happens in the movie is very very similar to the proceedings of the previous movie with more or less just a different face.

Many things that happen in this movie does not make any logical sense in the first place either. I won't give spoilers in the movie but basically we could just say the main alien villain in this movie makes the stupidest decisions among the many other choices of things that they could do for world domination.

As expected (i don't think this will be a spoiler), the humans will win in the end but its not because of human ingenuity or innovation. It's just purely because the alien boss, for reasons unknown, does the stupidest thing that leads to their loss.

You will just feel that this is a movie rehash especially if you seen the previous one but even if you didn't, you will also feel that in the logical line of things, the storyline is forced and does not really entertain.

There are also a lot of time wasting redundant scenes of random other people that honestly, even if removed, will have little effect on the movie overall. At least 2 bunch of scenes that probably overall took up 20 minutes of screen time that could very well be used elsewhere.

Flow of the movie was also very unimpressive and uninteresting and really, given the boringness of some of the characters, honestly you could fall asleep. On the bright side, since the characters are not really adding any value to the movie, you could wake up and still follow the movie and not feel that you missed out anything because honestly, you didn't.

Character 2/5
Character development is horrible. Honestly, you will go through the entire movie, nearly hating everyone for how shallow they all are. There are so many characters that they want to utilise, both main and side characters, but all of the side characters have so little screen time and significance.

The main characters are the typical "I hate you you hate me" at the beginning and then things happen and "I am now best buds with you" with the event that brings about this big change of heart being the most cliche thing you see in most movies.

All character relationships are not convincing and you will generally not bother or feel for the very forgettable characters in this movie.

Cinematography 3/5
This is probably the only thing that is going on for the movie. Destruction is epic and once the action gets on the way it is quite nice to see. But, it is nothing that would put this movie above the rest of the other movies that have been shown in the last few months. Add to that the overall lack of action scenes in general and it is that bit less entertaining.

It is supposed to be a very large spaceship, but this space ship is hardly utilised in any manner that would further boost the entertainment value of the movie which is a total waste. It is a war against the entire world, but no one else really participates.

Music 3/5
Music is fine, I will give that to them. There is a bit of nostalgia as some of the score is identical to the first one. But overall, it did not harm the experience but did not really add too much value to the movie either.

Spectacle 2/5
I would say especially for those who have seen the first movie, this movie will score very low both for storyline and action categories. Nothing it did this movie is really new, there is little development and you could very well go on to the third instalment (if they wanted) and this movie can just be totally ignored. Even if you have not seen this movie (since its 20 years ago), at most this movie can only be given a 3 instead as the storyline really lacks the coherence to draw u into the movie, the characters are forgettable and more or less expendable.

Overall
Storyline: 2 (Not a realistic or engaging storyline, follows the previous much too closely)
Character: 2 (Characters are hardly interesting and very forgettable)
Cinematography: 3 (When there is action, it is nonetheless quite nice to see. Pity the action scenes are too little in the first place)
Music: 3 (It's there, didnt hinder the entertainment value and added some value)
Spectacle: 2 (Didn't fare well for the storyline segment, action was fine, but in a period where every other movie has fantastic and more action scenes, this movie did not manage to stand out)

Overall: 2.4 (Quite an accurate description of the movie. In the end, it is really a forgettable movie, especially if you seen the first one cause its more or less identical. You can honestly just skip this movie and go on and wait to see if they make a third one. If you still want to see it though, just be prepared for the very ordinary story line and also be prepared to accept some not so logical parts of the movie. There are a lot of filler scenes in this movie that did not really add anything of interest to the movie.)

Movies: X-Men Apocalypse

Movies: X-Men Apocalypse

Introduction:

This would be the third movie in the rebooted X-men series of movies. The third one that will star the younger Magneto, Xavier as well as all many other characters. For those who are confused, X-men actually has had about 6 main X-men movies before this one, a few origin stories (with few more going to come out in the near future).

The first few of these movies were the one that starred the old guard and the most famous of which was Hugh Jackman who would then, thru these movies, become synonymous with Wolverine. So in sort, things happened in the first few movies, and more or less everyone died. So in X-men First Class, the storyline creators used Hugh again, to go back into time and this resulted in the alteration of the future. Note that this alteration means that the story after X-men First Class can and is very different from what had happened in the previous timeline that Hugh Jackman acted in. Therefore, they are able to start the whole story from scratch and tell it whatever way they want again. Nothing is set in stone and they pretty much can do anything they want to the X-men cinematic franchise from this point onwards.

X-men movies focuses on team work and team dynamics. Other movies tend to focus on other aspects of their movie characters to make it have their individual draw to the audience. Movies like Hulk focuses on the internal conflict of the person, Thor focuses on the god aspect coming from another planet, Iron man focuses on technology while Captain america focuses on super soldier and leadership aspects of the superhero world and their interaction with shield. Avengers on the other hand actually appeals to the same audience as the X-men but the advantage they have is that all the characters back stories are already fleshed out by the preceding movies. Hence X-men movies have a tough internal competitor that they would be competing with. So how did this movie perform when we break it down?

All the mutants, good and bad... and the ambiguous
Storyline 3/5

The story is quite standard, in fact, you it is kind of like pokemon whereby both sides, good and bad, spend some time going around the world getting their characters/heroes/mutants in the picture with Xavier on one side and Apocalypse on the other side. Then they just meet in the middle and start to duke it out.

You get to see many of the mutants with their various powers but all in all it is those mutants that we have already known for a long long time and as a result, the whole storyline is quite standard. There is no particular big twist and everything just progress "as expected"

The problem with the storyline is that the end is already more or less too obvious to be really exciting. Add to this that the movie focus is on storytelling of an already expected storyline, and the lack of action scenes, this movie is unable to really stand out far enough amongst the other movies out there.

Character 3.5/5

Character wise, I would say that we would already know most of their powers and there is nothing that will totally amaze the audience. Because they need to spend so much time recruiting new characters, all characters probably get only about 5 or 10 minutes of time as a introduction, and u see them again for another 5 minutes in their battle with each other and that is it. There is very little character building on both sides and the audience will not really feel for any of the characters at all.

That is really the problem with having too many characters in the movie, needing to introduce all of them, and yet trying to invest in the storyline all at one go. At the very least however, all the mutants are distinct and their powers are pretty varied so it is still exciting to the audience when you see them use their abilities. If only there were more screen time allocated to them using their power to the fullest potential though.

Cinematography 3/5

Sadly, this part got the movie down. For a movie that already has missed out a lot of opportunity for action portions, the further lack of using good action shots to entertain during the action portions itself made this movie quite ordinary. The only slightly good scene was the quicksilver scene but when it got to the main fight, it lost the steam a bit too quickly. Lots of lost opportunities there.

Music 3/5

Music was ordinary, I was not able to pick out the music being particularly beneficial to what was happening during the movie itself but at least it didn't harm the experience either.

Spectacle 3/5

Unfortunately, this was the main killer of the movie itself. Being a marvel film, everyone would already have a set expectation (which probably is gonna be quite high). On the storyline sense, unfortunately, this movie has the difficult job of setting the new stage right for the new X-men timeline but it was entirely, ordinary, collect your mutant style with too little twists. From the action aspect it also suffered greatly. Basically, every mutant is a 1 or 2 trick pony with just about 3 - 5 mins of them using their power in the entire movie. The ordinary cinematography also did the movie no favors and in the end, its the very much expected everyone just dump their power on the main bad guy and see him explode kind of movie. If it did not have any competition in the movie market, this may have been good enough, but in a world with avengers and DC comics coming up with their own movies, this movie did not really enthrall the viewer enough.

Overall

Storyline: 3 (Pretty obvious and uneventful storyline with too little twists to keep things interesting)
Character: 3.5 (Sure there are many mutants, and all their powers are distinct, but much opportunity was lost as they did not have the time to showcase their powers)
Cinematography: 3 (Lack of good shots for action scenes except that very one quicksilver scene)
Music: 3 (Ordinary music, did not harm but mostly did not support the movie either)
Spectacle: 3 (Unfortunately, they tried to focus on storyline which was overall too weak and obvious. Action wise, they did not manage to captialize. It wasn't bad, but neither was it any much more then average)

Overall: 3.1 (Well the score is quite telling of whether you should or should not see the movie. Basically, its a average movie, that you won't really call a total waste of your time, but there is no need to really make the time to see the movie if you don't have the spare time. Nothing much really happened this movie (you could just start the next movie with no impact from this movie) and the action did not really pull the audience in. The fact that people who already seen the other x-men movies would not really be impressed by this alternate retelling of the movie and the way the mutant powers are utilized as everything happens in a very ordinary, expected manner. You can go ahead and see it if you have the time, but if not, wait for the next one and DVD it if you needed to before the next movie.)

Well? What did you think of this movie? Did it hold a candle to the avengers series? Let me know in the comments!

Movies: Goosebumps

Movies: Goosebumps

Introduction
Goosebumps books, if that name doesn't ring a bell to you then you are probably from an earlier generation compared to me which is the 1980s generation. It is actually a bunch of stories written by R.L Stine starting in the 1992s onwards. There are actually nearly 150 books written from this author up to date and this is some impressive stuff. However, I will put it out there clearly that i have not read even ONE of his books, although i do vaguely remember seeing some of his books before on the shelves. Yep.. sorry that i prefer to see everything in film and seldom like to read.... that goes the same for stories like LOTR, Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner etc. In fact some of this movies I actually have the book but currently I have not even managed to go past the first book of Maze runner even though I seen the movie already.

Here are some of the cover of the books to share. Apparently some are already out of print but who knows what the movie can do for this book series

But anyway, back to this movie, and the first thing of interest in this movie is....... JACK BLACK?!?!?! Yep, with Jack Black, this will.. i mean can't be a serious movie. And you will see this very clearly in the movie. Jack Black cannot, and i repeat again, CANNOT be a fierce guy. His face just can't pass it off anymore. But lets go down to the movie content now!

Make no mistake, Jack Black is in this movie that is suppose to give you goosebumps

Storyline 3.5/5
Rest assured that this is a completely new storyline and not something that was written in a book (or perhaps there is a title for this special episode of goosebumps) and in this movie, you will see many many goosebumps characters which should thrill the fans of the books itself. The storyline itself does not take itself TOO seriously (again because Jack Black is here) and you will feel that this is a pretty light hearted movie in general.

Thanks to there being many goosebump characters, as a whole you will still have things to look forward to during the entire movie and it stays fresh enough, and there is a twist at some part of the movie to at least make a that little bit more entertaining then just a generic movie.

Hence a 3.5 score is what this movie deserves, nothing higher as it still follows a general movie plot, but at least it did make a tiny little twist and was somewhat entertaining while it lasted.

Character 3.5/5
There are a a lot of characters, humans and especially monsters alike. Unfortunately, much of the monster's background are not utilized to the fullest and basically in the end, all the monsters are about identical and just different forms of the bad guy.

The other human characters are fun and distinct in their own way and there is some effort of character development during the movie. But honestly, nothing totally strikes me as something on top of its class and it is just leaning completely on the huge selection of goosebump monsters to intrigue the crowd which is a waste when there is so little emphasis or effort to distinct or introduce them better.

Cinematography 3/5

Cinematography is average, nothing too epic or exciting and just some nice sunrise shots but that is about it. Not an action show of course but the lack of any good cinematography does make the movie a bit more boring.

Music 3/5

Identical to Cinematography, the music is there, but nothing of particularly unique impact to the audience experience but it does not distract from the experience either.

Spectacle 3/5

Well, I will try to look from the angle of it being a comedic movie with a unique storyline. For the comedy aspect it is passable and nothing that would cause you to laugh till your hips hurt. For the storyline, if you like goosebumps then you may OR may not have an advantage because you will be happy to see your goosebump characters, but there is really nothing that the movie does to make the presence of the monsters more felt by the audience. If you do not even read this movie, then basically you will just understand all the various monsters to just be one or the other form of a monster and it stops there. Being unable to stand out and stand tall from the other movies does cause the audience to just feel that this is one other generic movie.

Overall

Story: 3.5 (An ok story with a twist mid way to keep things interesting, but its nothing top class)
Character: 3.5 (Many characters and monsters, characters are fairly fun, monsters are quite many, but really, a lot of wasted potential and this movie could have done much better)
Cinematography: 3 (Ordinary movie shots, nothing too amazing)
Music: 3 (Ordinary music score, nothing too amazing, but didn't detract from the experience)
Spectacle: 3 (Was not able to stand out in terms of comedic value, neither was it able to stand out in storyline DESPITE having so many monsters to work with. Its really unfortunate)

Overall: 3.2 (As can be seen from the score and it blends in well with my overall feel of the movie, its an okay movie if you are looking for something to do and to spend time of. If you have read the books and just want to see your favorite monsters in the flesh, this is where you finally have a chance. But that being said, if you are not a fan, treat this as your usual thriller and don't over expect and you should be able to somewhat enjoy the movie itself, but don't fret if you miss this movie as you did not miss anything too much in reality.)

Let me know if you enjoyed this movie yourself or whether reading the books had a positive effect to your enjoyment of the movie!

Movies: Inside Out

Movies: Inside Out

Whoa whoa whoaa... wait a minute, is this movie even out yet?? Well if I have seen it, it means it must be out somewhere! And this time, for the first time, you are gonna have a review of a movie that is not even out in Singapore yet! I feel like a real movie critic/reviewer now! And here goes!

Ever wonder what is going on inside your head? Wondering where all the different feelings come from? Well Pixar/Disney have figured a way to perhaps explain what goes on inside your head and it does more then that, it even goes one step further and even explain how come someone may even lose all feeling and how your feelings change over time. Any more information will be spoilers for all so let me just get into the review and keep it as spoiler free as possible!

The 5 feelings, Fear, Anger, Joy, Sadness and Disgust... guess which is the cutest!
Will tell you all which is the cutest at the end of the review!!

Storyline 4.5/5

Admittedly, this is a pretty strong scoring. However, after you see it, its quite likely you will agree with me because the way the story is written, it not only caters to the kids (like traditional disney movies) but this one also caters very strongly to the parent and adult crowd so that you will not feel as if you are bringing your kids out for a movie that you might not enjoy yourself. It's intelligent writing makes it entertaining and self reflecting to everyone of the various ages in the family.

If you can't really get what i mean, then you can try seeing this movie and you will know what I mean!  The storyline is kept pretty personal from start to end and it also has numerous amusing portions that actually gives a disney explanation why we feel or react in certain ways.

Character 4/5

This movie may appear to only have 5 main characters but in reality, of those 5, although all have their own uniqueness, not all have equal screen time nor are all 5 impactful. There are additional characters added during the movie and some may have even more impact than these main characters. If there was a bit more emphasis on the 5 feelings it would have scored higher.

Nonetheless, the main focal characters (2 feelings) and one of the additional character not featured in the poster will bring out most of the "feels" of the movie.

Cinematography 4/5

Its not an action flick, but the way the movie is told is pretty immersing in making you identify with the human characters of the movie and the way the brain works.

Disney using pretty good panning outward shots to feature how vast the different aspects of the mind are that we all should be able to identify with and this adds quite good believabilty to the audience.

Music 3.5/5

The story is the main focus of this movie although you will notice how the music is used to evoke stronger feelings from the audience. Good or bad, that depends on how cool you want to look after the movie. (i.e. real man don't cry)

Spectacle 4.5/5

This movie gets high points based on the applicability of the story to both the adult and kid audience which is not an easy feat. Add to it the various minor effects (music, cinematography) to invoke the thought process of the older audience makes this a really immersive experience that both audience types will appreciate. Like many disney movies that focus on the importance of friends/family/love etc. this movie's focus on family is very strong, and well brought out that you may even return from the movie learning how to cherish what you have and better live your life.

Yep, its that kind of meaningful movie.

Overall

Storyline: 4.5 (Strong story that caters to adults even more then kids, its not easy to do that)
Characters: 4 (Has potential to have included more of the characters but does above average nonetheless)
Cinematography: 4 (Smart use of perspective and high camera shots to explain the human mind)
Music: 3.5 (Its definitely there aiding the audience in feeling what the directions want them to feel, any better, this movie may get too emotion)
Spectacle: 4.5 (A movie that is quite high above the rest in terms of storyline for the family audience. The rest of the movie aspects add more audience immersiveness and personal feelings which works well for this movie. This is probably all the movie was intending to do and it did it well enough!)
Overall: 4.1(Its not an action movie so don't go there with an all guy group preferably. For those with significant others, or those with kids, this will probably be the movie for you, in fact it probability will be more thought provoking for you then your kids. Nonetheless, the kids will enjoy the color and fun of the movie, while you will enjoy the story. If you want to see a girl cry, this may be a good opportunity. Don't say I didn't warn you ah!)

And to close off, the winner of the cutie contest is....... this little blue fella! Watch the movie and see if you will agree with me!

Time to slack off and wallow in self pity...

Movies: Jurassic World

Movies: Jurassic World

If at first glance, you thought that this movie sounded familiar, then you must be from the same generation as me! Indeed it has actually been a cool 22 YEARS since the first Jurassic park was shown (1993). In fact, from its most recent Jurassic park it was already 14 years ago. Yep. Jurassic Park III was actually shown in 2001. After that, there's been some TV series, but no there were no serious contender to the Jurassic park series... until now! And in case you are confused at the name change, no worries, Jurassic world indeed was made to be a continuation of the Jurassic Park series.

So how did the movie go? was this a good reboot to the series? Lets break it down and take a look

Storyline 3.5/5

Well.. considering that the previous similar storyline was done nearly 22 years ago.. I would say that the storyline is somewhat refreshing. It's not totally new, but it has not been done for such a long time we can consider this a fresh start. Especially for those who didn't see the first few Jurassics, you will find this a very thought provoking and interesting storyline.

There were a few portions of the movie whereby the the characters (humans and dinos alike) did not really follow the logical path of action but it was all for the purpose of making the movie much longer and entertaining experience so don't be too critical to be expecting a movie that completely does not raise any brows in disbelief.

There is a fair bit of entertainment value and amusement in the conversations and happenings throughout the movie including the tense portions but there is also the addition of the obligatory love story blahblah thing that I would say was just slightly detracting from the movie. The pace is not fully action packed and a good part of slightly more then the first half of the movie is to introduce you to the new theme park that is Jurassic World and it was somewhat slower paced at the beginning. However, once it picks up into the action, it keeps it that way till the end.

Character 3/5

Character also runs into the similar problem as storyline, meaning that the development of the character does not really follow logical progression. It may be overthinking it a little but you probably won't feel as much connection to the characters as to the dinosaurs themselves honestly.

Nonetheless, they are playing the family stick together storyline style and I guess its passable in general although this is nothing that will steal the show.

Cinematography 4.5/5

Good cinematography and its very cool at how they make use the of the special abilities of the dinosaur in the movie itself. There are also a lot of noteworthy action shots and even first person shooter style that look like it could come out from game itself.

There are also a lot of great shots to show the overall scale of the world with dinosaurs involved and it really adds to the enjoyable experience. You will be able to appreciate the scale of the world when you have dinosaurs in the picture and like what the movie wants to do, you will learn how small we humans would have been comparatively.

Music 4/5

One major smart movie that the movie did was to make use of the all familiar sound track from the very first Jurassic park to bring about the nostalgic feeling to the audience who have last seen this movie close to 2 centuries ago.

Overall also, the music is noticeable in immersing the audience into the lull that is the Jurassic THEME park before throwing you into the real Jurassic everything goes to hell park.

Spectacle 4/5

Considering how rare a movie of this scale is nowadays, this is really a refreshing improvement and difference to the usual action movie that is merely man on man or man on monster. It also does a fine job of introducing u to a world where maybe theme parks will be different, and yet how it can go so very very wrong. Action is done pretty well in this movie with a nice climatic finish in the end that will most likely entertain u pretty well.

Sadly, its story is not as intriguing and merely serves just as a medium to get the story across due to the many inconsistencies in the usual logical paths or action that characters will take. Nonetheless, the shots and action part makes up for it leading to a very enjoyable dinosaur movie.

Overall

Storyline: 3.5 (Good enough storyline, has some inconsistencies but overall flowing.)
Character: 3 (Not easy to relate to character story lines and somewhat cliché. Ironically, the dinosaurs may attract more emotional connection then the humans)
Cinematography: 4 (Good epic and action shots, even better then some action movies out there)
Music: 4 (Good usage of music to bring out nostalgic effects, also helps audience immerse)
Spectacle: 4 (Been too long since there was a dinosaur movie and that alone helped it score high. Only let down was the overall story direction)

Overall: 3.7 (I would say that this is definite a good action show and a way to spend about 2 hours of the day if you have nothing superb to do. You will probably enjoy this movie even more if you saw the first 3 movies and can appreciate how times have changed and the movie pretext has advanced through the years. In fact, if you plan to see this, take a few days and watch the first 3 movies with your pals and friends first and you should be able to enjoy this movie even more. Just don't expect too much or a too spectacular kind of storyline and you should be all set for this movie)

Next movie on the list is Minions and hopefully I can get the review up ASAP! Thanks all for reading and comment if there is anything!!

Tribute: Mr Lee Kuan Yew 1923 - 2015

Tribute: Mr Lee Kuan Yew 1923 - 2015

As you all are aware of, this is world wide news, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, one of the oldest residence of Singapore, the holder of NRIC number S0000003E has finally come to rest. The people of his generation, have already went before him and finally, after battling with the natural wear and tear of the human body, he finally has a chance to be at peace and rest.

I'm no traditional blogger, with no ability to write a proper tribute like them, nor poems, nor songs. But what I can do in my own capacity, is what I have always been doing. To give a final review of what kind of person Lee Kuan Yew has shown himself to be. I'm but a layman, but like every other layman Singaporean, this is what I know about him and what I feel about him from all the sources of information around me and the Singapore around me.

Leadership 5/5
Lee Kuan Yew was a person who worked his way up. He didn't start in a position near political power, but as a ordinary lawyer like many Singaporeans today, but he didn't have interest in money, he didn't have interest in fame, but he had interest in Singapore, and in making Singaporeans different from the rest of the world. We are not the traditional country with plenty of resources to get rich by, we are not even the country with plenty of people to utilize. But he made the most of what he could do, going around the entire Singapore to rally support for decisions and to relay confidence when the country was shaken. Look at the people and yourself and think of the aims for money, fame or property we have today, and you will know why we are not like Lee Kuan Yew. At best we want a good life for our families, but for Lee Kuan Yew, he wanted a good life for everybody and he did it.

He knew he had the influencing power to give confidence and direction to the people, and this was what he knew he had to do personally. He was a born and trained leader not through academic studies, but through discipline and the drive to lead. He was a leader who spent as much time on the ground as he spent in strategy making.

There will never be a leader like him, to do both ground work and thought work simultaneously especially if you look at how Lee Kuan Yew started out in the very beginning stages of his political career without a entire entourage to help him.

Speechcraft 5/5
If you listen to his speeches, you will notice something about this man. He speaks his mind without fear, because he knows that if you follow his direction, it will be the right direction. He speaks for his team, and makes good of his promises and is more then willing to be held accountable for them.

He speaks with fire and with emotion, because he feels that the country is as much his as much as it belongs to the people, and he knows he has the right direction to lead Singapore. And he was right. When he speaks, you can see the determination he has and the enthusiasm to make good of his words and he does this while not constantly referring to a script. For people who do speeches or plan to do speeches, if you believe in what you say, you will realise that you don't need a script, because this is your natural direction already. Lee Kuan Yew knew of the direction he would take Singapore, and was convinced and assured as time proved that he was right.

Also, respect to MR Lee Kuan Yew, who though being english educated, made it a point to learn Mandarin, dialects and Malay for the sole purpose of appealing to the crowd he is talking to. This was the sacrifice and mental energy that he expended to make sure he was perfect in speeches, and all his efforts paid off in the end.

Do we have a leader like that today? Do we still speak what is politically correct in fear of offending others? Do we make effort to learn the language of others just so that we can identify better then them? You know the answer to these questions and suffice to say, he deserves respect in the speechcraft arena.

Dedication 5/5
If you haven't, google Lee Kuan Yew's little red box which described the way he carried out his task on a daily basis. I can safely say that if you spend time surfing the net during your work hours, you are far away from how dedicated Lee Kuan Yew was to carrying out his task as a minister of Singapore. This was a person who eat, sleep and breathed Singapore. A person who dedicated almost everything to Singapore and as he famously said, his life for Singapore. A person, who stayed up late and lost sleep to make sure that his people could sleep longer, with peace and security.

You see a person whose his wife rested earlier then him, yet managed to shift his focus to Singapore and his work to keep himself going instead of breaking down benefiting no one.

He was not in it for the money and honestly, there is hardly any news that said Lee Kuan Yew misused or was extravagant in his spendings. He was truly a person who was in politics for the people, and not for himself, because he was dedicated to Singapore and the people and nothing else.

You see a person, that dared to give promises beyond death that although impossible, are strong words that not many of us dare to even imagine, let alone utter out. This was the extent of the dedication he had for Singapore.

Would our leaders today be like that? It's hard to say because none of them are like Lee Kuan Yew who spent nearly 30 years as PM of Singapore, another 14 years as SM of Singapore and 7 years as a mentor to Singapore. He didn't want to stop as long as he thought he could contribute and regardless of whether or not he did especially in his older days, his spirit and drive for Singapore can't be denied.

Foresight 5/5
Mr Lee was a leader in attitude and spirit which is all good and important, but what he also had was foresight to see what the country needed, and to lead the country in the direction to get it. This is a blessing that not many people in the world would have and share, but Singapore had the fortune to be blessed with foresight through Mr Lee and his direction.

He saw the importance of the English and Chinese language, and thanks to him, we are now able to go compete and gain economically from both powers of the world to the extent where westerners are amazed at our grasp of English and Chinese welcome us as we converse in their familiar language.

He knew what steps he had to take to lead to the economic prosperity of Singapore and this is evidenced in the Singapore you see today that stemmed from the good direction that he set right at the get go. Even more commendable was that he did this without the natural resources that other countries have.

He never forgot the importance of being green, and thus we do not have a grey urban country, but a country that has its pockets of greenery that do bring some calm to the hectic lives we live in today that will be enjoyed by us and the generation to come.

No one today has been proven to have seen as far as Mr Lee has and has created a country that is comfortable to live in whileunder his charge. And let us also remember, Mr Lee did this without the help of computers or simulations which is an even more insurmountable feat and I am doubtful anyone can do this anymore in this modern age.

Personal Touch 4.5/5
When you look at the crowds of people who are visiting him as he lay upon his state rest, you see people from all walks of life, all ages, all races, coming together as one to bid him farewell. You see the elderly, the people who directly benefited from the decisions of Lee Kuan Yew,  making their way to the city (a place that the old won't really find a reason to be in) just to say their final farewells, with tears in their eyes. They can personally testify to how their lives were changed and are grateful because the lives of their children and grand children are better, because of his sacrifice. You hear the stories from the people whom he fought for while as a lawyer, right from the start, before he started his fight for all Singaporeans. He didn't aim for GDP growth for GDP growth sake, but he aimed to give us Singaporeans a good life, a standard of living above that of the world and this resulted in the GDP growth during his time as the Prime Minister. He was a down to earth minister from the get go, and the people of his time all knew this.

When you look at Lee Kuan Yew, you don't see only a minister or a politician, giving speeches and meeting dignitaries, but you see husband and a father, living and bringing up his family the only way he knows how, which is by giving his best. He is not just some person high up, but a human who loves, just like you and me and finally he may rest, together with his wife, ashes to be mixed together, for as long as time permits.
Credits to Ashley
The only thing he lacked out of necessity, was to be gracious to people who may or may not (but in his opinion may) had the motive to harm Singapore all the way to the end which might have been a impossible task when the country he had worked so hard to achieve and build was at stake. But let's face it, Lee Kuan Yew is only human, just like all of us.

You can't hear of dedication on the personal level like him today. To esteem and remember all the moments with his wife, with ZERO issues that plague politicians all over the world today such as scandals and corruption.

Spectacle 5/5
There will never be someone else like him whose achievements are recognized all over the world even by people of stature and authority. There will never be any chance to make a difference as big as him in Singapore, because we have already travelled the entire path from 3rd to 1st world and are already in front of the pack. There is no longer as large a developmental gap left in this world for Singapore to bridge as we grew exponentially faster to catch up with the front. There will never again be someone, who can touch the hearts of the Singaporean people, uniting them regardless of race, language or religion to respect even if they did not agree, with the direction LKY took us.There will never be anyone else, as synonymous to Singapore as Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore.

Overall

Leadership: 5 (A leader who led by example, coming from the bottom up)
Speechcraft: 5 (A persuasive man who spoke his mind and walked his talk)
Dedication: 5 (A person who gave up everything for his people, including his life)
Foresight: 5 (A person who made Singapore the way it is, respected by the world)
Personal Touch: 4.5 (A person who was a father and husband and taught us how to be a good father and husband too)
Spectacle: 5 (A person who is likely the only one in the world with such an achievement of bringing up a country like Singapore, from 3rd to 1st world.)

Overall: 4.9 (There's no doubt about it. Lee Kuan Yew will be remembered in Singapore as the person who led and gave the direction for the development of the country and more importantly, succeeded. He did this from the bottom up, starting with small feats that garnered him respect, worked with all sorts of people to push his agenda, handled setbacks and made personnel sacrifices, all for the country that he loved and the people of that country Singapore. There will be no one like him but rightly so, because there is no one with his leadership, speechcraft, dedication and foresight, matched with his personal touches that made him so human to the people he served. Singaporeans have much to appreciate and be grateful for and the best way to do this is to serve with the spirit that Lee Kuan Yew has served, to the best of our abilities. Majulah Singapura!)

Movies: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Movies: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

It's been a while since the last installment of the Hunger Games, and for those who do not know what this movie is... you probably don't see movies much... I remember this movie as the first movie to show its advertisements almost a year before it really came out (or was it six months) which I thought was a bit extravagant. Nonetheless, its one of those movies that follows a book similar to LOTR and Harry Potter and is currently doing a Harry Potter thing which is instead of being a normal Trilogy, they take the last book/episode and split it into two.

What this means is that you will not get  closure at the end of this movie. It's more like seeing a serial or a normal TV show where it will end abruptly. What this also means is that you probably need to manage your expectation when you see the movie. I will tell you more as we move along

For those who do not know, this movie is set in an alternative universe where by all the people in the world are divided into districts. In their districts they are in charge of various tasks and products that they will supply to the capital where all the rich and famous and strange people live. So you have districts that focus on woodworks, some that focus on mining, some on farming etc. So every year or some time that I don't remember, there is hunger game whereby some people from the districts are selected to fight to the death and the last remaining person gets much riches and food and all that. So obviously after many years of doing this, you soon get some sort of rebellion started which is the focus of the next set of movies starting with Mockingjay Part I. So this is the starting phase of the rebellion itself. To not give any further spoilers, the introduction ends at this point. Here's some pictures

The movie that started it all
The continuation, look at her bow!
This movie's poster!!
Look her bow is gone.. wonder why

So if you did not watch the first two however, I would recommend that you actually see the first two because it does add some value to the movie especially since it introduces everything that happens and the new world that this movie is based in. In fact, I will go as far as to say, if you didn't see the first two of this movie, you will not enjoy it. You will understand as we go along.

Storyline 4/5

The storyline is the main aspect of this point of the movie. In fact I would say that the storyline makes or breaks the entire enjoyment of the movie because this show lacks action. Yep. Unlike the other 2 movies that came before this, this movie action portion is maybe only about 15% of the entire show.

You pretty much should treat this movie as a build up to the next movie episode where all the action is. The thrilling and exciting sequence is still here in this movie, but there is not much action. See the movie and you will know what I mean.

That is why you have to see the first two, then you will appreciate the build up. Or else you will have zero clue why the main characters in the movie are running all around the place and doing this and that and if you were to see the movie without any background it would probably only be worth 3/5 points.

Characters 3/5

A lot of the development of the movie has been done in the previous movies before this. As such there is not much character development here in this movie. The difficulty this movie faces is that in a world like theirs, the people start to lose their character and basically become like everyone else. And this shows in the movie where everyone else feels relatively similar. You also might not know who many of the people in the movie are if you did not see the previous and hence you will have no clue why they are doing certain actions in the movie.

They do make some fair effort to distinct some people from another by giving them stranger hairdos and characteristics but there won't be nothing spectacular that makes you like any particular person. As in any rebellion there are a few speeches, but I guess it was the aim of the movie to show that because the characters in this movie are not born politicians, the speeches are not as inspiring as it should be.

Cinematography 3.5/5

This movie has some pretty good shots overall but unlike the first two, due to the lack of action scenes there is not much superb action shots. Has some nice outward top down views to show u more about the world and it does have the occasional epic things happening.

There is only portion in this movie however, that shows you that you can make a movie very thrilling, without having action. They do this towards the end of the movie so watch out for it the way they build up the audience and not have to worry about blowing extra money on budget. Hopefully, this translates to a more epic part II.

Music 4/5

The musical score does a very good job in this movie. In fact, music is used up to build a certain portion of the movie which is pretty creative although sometimes it feels slightly awkward to have someone singing as a part of the movie. Nonetheless it did a good job adding entertainment value to the show itself

Spectacle 4/5

Overall, especially for people who read the book and saw the first two, this movie does the story telling portion very creatively and well. But being the only focus of this movie, it takes a toll on the action scenes which is pretty minor for this movie. Thrilling factor however picks up very well towards the end of the movie and you will probably enjoy that portion of the movie well enough to say that the movie was in the end pretty entertaining. Its not the best and they could have done many things differently to cater to the more main stream action lovers, but for storyline lovers, this movie does well enough.

Overall

Storyline 4 (Main focus of the movie, does it pretty well, moves the story along to build up for the next movie)
Character 3 (Did not spend too much effort on this because this was done in the previous movie, if you didn't see the previous, you might get lost)
Cinematography 3.5 (Good effort and has some enjoyable shots but wasn't the focus of this movie)
Music 4 (Creatively incorporated in the music into the show and added much entertainment value)
Spectacle 4 (Did well on both the thriller and storyline fronts but sacrificed a bit of action for the movie, probably was not the focus either)

Overall 3.7 (My advice to you is, see the first two before you see this or it will not be enjoyable to you, and also if you think you are going to see the continuation of this movie in the future you can go ahead and watch it. The storyline and entertainment value of the movie is definitely there if you are a fan but just not derived from the usual pure action sequences. Not having too many epic scenes however means that you could actually just wait for Part II to come out and then see the movies together for you to have a complete picture instead of being cliff hangered but its up to you. Nonetheless, its a worthwhile way to spend a movie session especially since its quite a long movie)

Here is something fun for you to do! As you can see from the poster, this girl likes bows and arrows a lot. Count the number of arrows she fired in this movie!!!

Movies: Dracula Untold

Movies: Dracula Untold

Dracula! A story that has been told many ways, and sometimes it is confusing whether he is really real or not. He has been remade in games and is probably one of the clearer examples and origins of the common vampires that spawned shows like twilight. Nonetheless, with a name like Dracula Untold, is it really different and worth watching?!?!

For those who don't know, this is one iteration of dracula

Here is cartoon dracula

Well, fortunately for us today, our dracula is movie version dracula

but just for good measure here is another dracula

Here is game version dracula

Handsome little fella huh! but next question to ask is, is this Dracula story really an untold story? Lets read on and find out, especially since the answer is covered in the next section!

Storyline 4/5

I can't spoil the story for you because this movie story is quite a bit of fun. Nonetheless, lets say that this dracula tells a different story from what we usually believe and understand, just like how maleficent made us sympathize with the witch! Yep it is that kind of retelling of the story. But of course being made not by Disney, this movie will contain just a bit less lovey dovey or cutsie stuff.

The other point about this movie is that it focus on how Dracula came to become the person he is known by us to be and the "struggles" he met along the way. So it is more character development focused and the various twists and turns along the way makes it interesting to the end of this 93 mins flick.

Last point to praise is that this movie actually had many stops where they could very well have ended the movie there and then, however, this movie will then go on just that step further before reaching another possible ending spot and going on that step further again. As a result, this movie feels longer then it actually is because you get the feeling that "oh there is something more".

Character 3/5

Unfortunately for this movie though, the character development was not too well done and too greatly carried out. The first part of the movie (20 mins) was particularly for character building but it felt a bit draggy. Once it got to the action scenes however, it would be a bit more interesting but then in action scenes there is little character development.

Most of the development is on Dracula which is done above average well with only slight unbelievable or incoherent sections. However this meant that everyone else was greatly neglected and in essence its true. Almost everyone else in this movie would be someone unimportant and minor and you will not really feel for any of them.

Cinematography 4/5

Cinematography for this movie was done well. There are a few of exciting and impactful action sequences with good use of high shots and perspective shots to bring across the action flavor. It is almost towards 300 standards in terms of action sequences BUT it is highly lacking in the amount of action sequences. Most sequences could have really gone on much longer to show more of the power of Dracula and make it even more action packed.

Nonetheless given the short time frame, I would say the scenes and shots are done above average standards and will give you fair bit of entertainment and wow factors. That till you realised that they could have done so much more.

Just note that because Dracula only fights at night, some fight scenes might be too fast and too dark... not too many of them thankfully

Music 4/5

Music in this movie was there and it did have quite a positive impact in the overall feel of the movie. You can definitely feel that the music was helping this movie.

Spectacle 4/5

Storyline was good and flowing and it was kept exciting with enough twists and turns. Although there were slow sections especially in the beginning of the movie and some illogical portions of the movie and other aspects were not fully and properly explained. But nonetheless the gist and main purpose of the story line would keep you intrigued.

Action wise was also well done with good shots and sufficient scenes. So doing both well puts this movie above average on the spectacle department.

Overall

Storyline 4 (Sufficient twists and turns to keep the movie exciting)
Character 3 (Main character is focus of character development but not done completely well, all other characters feel slightly neglected)
Cinematography 4 (Good shots for actions overall, just a bit too few shots)
Music 4 (Present and adds a bit of immersion to movie)
Spectacle 4 (Action and story line segments are done well above average but still not excellent yet, still to do these two sections well it is pretty good entertainment value overall)

Overall 3.8 (Overall 3.8 is a pretty fair score. Its a see able show, somewhat short but has sufficient entertainment value to be worth the time and money. Anyway it is only 93 mins long so it's not that big a investment. Action lovers and storyline lovers will be fine with the plot and the bit of action it brings. It should be fresh for most people giving the unique angle by which they are recreating the story.)

Movies: The Purge Anarchy

Movies: The Purge Anarchy

Hi all! its been awhile but I was just settling into my new job and there wasn't really any nice movie to review about. The drought has ended however with the latest movie being the 2nd in the series! Yep. For those who don't know, the Purge Anarchy is actually a follow up to a previous movie called The purge. For those who don't know, here are the posters!

This is the previous one, simply called the purge
The next in the list is the one we are reviewing today which is

So i will excuse you if you cannot see the link! Its a drastic change in the poster design, from a real literal poster form to one with the traditional actors bad/good guys standing there in the front.

Which is apt because unlike the first movie, which actually focused on the event itself and how a single family kept themselves protected, now this movie focuses on something else. Is this new focus better for the movie? Well read on to find out!

Storyline 4.5/5

This movie is all about this! And honestly, i would say that it is done in a very good way. Basically there are two stories that are going on, one is about the main character in this movie, while the other is about the purge in general. The movie goes about this in a very good and clear way and it is never messy and keeps moving forward.

The movie has sufficient twists where it introduces more about this new world that they are in and keeps the entire show exciting all the way till the end.

It also does a fine job of keeping everything underwraps till its time to reveal it and honestly all the happenings in the movie are pretty believable in what you would expect the world to be logically should such a occurrence really come into play.

Character 4/5

There is some particular focus on character and their background and explaining why they do the things the way they do... in fact this movie also explains quite a bit on the background of certain groups of people and what they decide to carry out during the purge itself. This adds a lot of good entertainment content to the audience as they are able to identify which kind of persons they will be like should the purge really happen and its really engaging in that sense

All the possible types of characters that were introduced is also highly probable to exist in the real world should something like this happens and this adds to the immersion value.

Of course many groups were just introduced for a very short bit of time and they could very well have some little teaser or entertainment value but i guess that would be a time constraint for the movie. Nonetheless it also leaves the possibility of expanding further into a 3rd movie.

Cinematography 4/5

There are really some good shots taken in this movie. High up shots to highlight how empty the streets are and even some close up perspective shots that are expected of an action movie. Only this movie actually did incorporate these shots into the movie that really added a lot to the immersion and entertainment value.

Music 3.5/5

I might have gotten lost in the storyline of the movie that I did not really notice whether the music was there. But I guess it should have been or else I would have noticed the lack. Sound effects were really strong in this movie though and it lend quite a bit to the impact.

Spectacle 4.5/5

This movie did really well in the spectacle department. It introduced a new world properly and combined the storyline focus with good action and it was above all, very believable. This movie has good source content to work with and the movie did a good job of telling the audience everything in the time constraint given.

It did a good job of being a thriller also keeping the audience intrigued and glued to the seat. This is probably a good example of a way a movie should be made.

Overall

Story 4.5 (Very intriguing story even for those who saw the first one due to the different story telling angle. It's a interesting new world to introduce)
Character 4 (Good background for those who were very important, a few groups could have used a bit more elaboration)
Cinematography 4 (For a movie that didn't actually have action as its utmost focus, it did well in putting in quite a few exciting bits.)
Music 3.5 (Had good effects, didn't really notice the music)
Spectacle 4.5 (Very good way to do two genres namely the action as well as storyline genre. Kept the movie exciting all the way)

Overall 4.1 (It's a good movie, and will appeal well to the general audience. Only one it won't appeal to is those who are super easily frightened. None the less you should be able to appreciate everything this movie has done and even at the end, it keeps you thinking.. what if one day this is our reality?)

I would honestly recommend this for those who want something to do. You probably cannot really go wrong with a movie like this.

Movies: The Maze Runner

Movies: The Maze Runner

It's sometimes quite interesting how they transfer some games that we played such as games like battleship and convert them to the big screen. Mazes are nothing new to us, we probably played this when we were young and had a pencil. So did the producer manage to make full use of this ever so familiar maze concept that we have in our minds and boost it into the big screen? Read on to find out!

Storyline 3.5/5

These movies with a fixed focus such as the maze in this case, will also have the free reign of how to go about fleshing out the background as well as the reason for having this maze.

The movie starts with the introduction to this new world but doesn't give any reason for its existence and what is really happening. It intentionally keep things vague and the first chunk of the movie just explains what is life inside the maze like. Then it moves into the maze itself and what happens inside before finally using the end part to explain the origin and future of the maze.

To prevent spoilers which is important because this movie is all about storyline, I have to be vague in my description and yet still be able to convey to you whether this movie has a good storyline.

All in all, in my opinion, this movie has a solid story in the beginning as it moves from situation to situation but towards the end, everything comes crashing down especially at the explanation of the maze itself as it hardly makes sense. Maybe book readers will find it easier to understand but for me at the end, the reason for this maze existence is strange.

Yet this movie still gets a 3.5/5 because of the fact that they have many different focuses through out the movie and there are various twists here and there that keeps the story engaging although not always logical.

It's a show with a lot of links that you might need to draw yourself however, and as such you may need to think a bit more then your traditional movie. As such also, the pace might be slower then the usual action flicks out there because remember, this is not an action film.

Characters 3.5/5

This movie mostly focuses on the main character as he tries to understand his past and what the maze is for and how to get out of it. This would mean that one character is also the maze itself and hence there is less time used for all the other people in the movie.

Nonetheless, important characters are somewhat fleshed out and if you see the movie itself, these characters are like the girl and the mazerunner guy which could have had more background or support for why they act the way they are. There's only like 2 characters with a bit more back story but at least all the rest of the characters in the movie are distinct in some small way which is good.

All in all, there are some characters that you will end up somewhat sympathizing which works well for this movie but they could have made it even more heart wrenching.

Cinematography 3/5

Its not an action movie but there are some good epic shots here and there. One issue however is that some scenes are particularly dark and also too close up that you don't really know what is happening which is detrimental to the enjoyment of the movie.

In terms of the thriller effect, its quite well done and will keep you strapped to the seat if the scene wasn't too dark in some occasion.

Music 3/5

Didn't really notice this particularly in this movie and have no recollection of whether it was used to build up suspense or anything like that.

Spectacle 3.5/5

In the aspect of storyline and introduction of a new world situation to the audience, as well as the usage of the maze which is the critical part of the movie, this movie did MOSTLY the right thing all the way until they tried to explain the presence of the maze. Fortunately this part is far into the movie which meant that it would be bugging your mind throughout the movie so it works in the movie's favor. Had enough twists also and is generally believable.

Did a good job of being a thriller with a lot of exciting and suspenseful scenes overall to keep the audience glued to the seat although there are sections which are somewhat slower and slightly too draggy..

Overall

Storyline: 3.5 (Was fine, believable and coherent with sufficient twists till the end when suddenly they tried to explain the maze in a very strange way)
Character: 3.5 (Focus was on the Maze as a character as well as the main character, side characters were somewhat fleshed out and you might empathize slightly but there is many room for improvement)
Cinematography: 3 (Thrilling scenes were generally well taken until the dark night scenes where you might actually lose track of what was happening which is sad and a waste)
Music: 3 (Didn't really notice this at any point of the movie but was not a detriment to enjoyment)
Spectacle: 3.5 (Movie focus was probably storyline but it somewhat crashed at the end. Still a above average thriller)

Overall: 3.3 (I guess it would be a fair score for this movie. Action lovers might not fully enjoy this movie unless you also like thrillers. Try not to expect too much with regards to a proper explanation of why was all these happening. You will never really know why even all the way to the end. Instead just try to keep your focus on the escape of the main character and how it is done. Try not to be too critical and you probably can enjoy this movie. It's pretty long too which is good in terms of money efficiency. You won't dislike this movie but it might just fall slightly short of being a fully satisfying experience.)
